When Should I Replace My Ductwork? | R. A. Styron | Chesapeake HVAC Specialists

When replacing your HVAC system, it’s vital to take a good look at your ductwork as well. Poorly installed, damaged, or improperly sized ductwork will negatively impact your HVAC system leading to early breakdowns and high utility costs.

When installing a new HVAC system, you have to consider more than just the equipment itself. New systems will not operate efficiently if your ductwork is damaged or improperly sized. Most ductwork will last approximately 20-25 years. However, after about 15 years ductwork can and will start to deteriorate.

There are a few factors to consider when deciding if its time to change your duct system or not.

Improperly sized and/or installed ductwork will restrict airflow negatively impacting your system operations. Airflow is vital to not only keeping you comfortable, it’s also a major factor to ensure a properly functioning system. Restricted airflow causes frost buildup leading to moisture and drainage problems. Any homeowner who has dealt with water damage in the past knows how hard it is to properly clean and repair moisture damage.

Any contractor should be visually inspecting the duct system to ensure the ductwork is positioned or hung correctly. Too many bends, runs, drooping, or crushed ductwork will severely impact airflow. The straighter and freer flowing the ductwork, the better. If you’re concerned about the layout or sizing ask your contractor for a Manual J and/or D report. These reports show appropriate duct sizing and layout.

Damaged and leaking ductwork will also lead to higher utility bills and/or breakdowns. Did you know that as much as HALF of your monthly energy bill comes directly from heating and cooling your home? So, you can only imagine how much money is wasted when damage to your duct system is ignored. No one wants to waste hard earned money on conditioning the crawlspace or attic of your home. Damaged ductwork doesn’t necessarily mean it needs to be replaced. Problems areas can be easily fixed with specialized tape or straps.
