Winter Prepping

I don’t know about other people but I sure hate when I turn my a/c on in the spring and it doesn’t work properly because I failed to prep it for winter in the fall! Let’s not be like me. Follow these steps and avoid this money pit problem.

How do I know if my system is ready for winter?

Good question! Typically, having your system cleaned twice a year on a regular basis will ensure that. Plus, it can increase HVAC performance and help you avoid costly emergency repairs—because no one wants to be left without heat in the middle of a snowstorm. Most people only see the outside of the system and it probably looks shiny so why waste money on a cleaning. Not the case! Just like us humans, what’s on the inside is what matters! Truth is, a non-certified technician will not know if it’s ready for winter. However, we can surely try. Here are a few steps to follow:

Shut it down

Turn off all power to the unit before performing any maintenance; be sure to wait for the blower to stop.

Filters (out with the old and in with the new)

Replace air filters at least once every three months. Dirty filters can cause your system to work harder, resulting in lower efficiency and sometimes expensive problems.

Sound Check 1..2..3..

Turn your unit on, and check for unusual sounds, like banging, rattling, or even whistling.

Check for any wet spots

Check for moisture on windows, or rust or dirt accumulations on the vent pipe. This can indicate improper operation and turn into future problems.

Cozy Room Temp.

Check your thermostat’s temperature while the unit is on to ensure rooms are reaching their full comfort potential and yours of course,
